Liberals move quickly after GM layoffs to announce job retraining

TORONTO - Ontario's Liberal government is moving quickly on a retraining program for laid-off workers after General Motors said it would close its Oshawa truck plant.

Premier Dalton McGuinty will visit Seneca College on Thursday to unveil details of a $1.5 billion re-training program announced in this year's budget. The government says McGuinty will put some 'meat on the bone' of the budget promise. Training, Colleges and Universities Minister John Milloy says the second-careers plan will give unemployed workers longer-term training.

But NDP Leader Howard Hampton predicts the announcement will be "just another photo op," instead of real action to stop the job losses in Ontario's struggling manufacturing sector.

Opposition Leader Bob Runciman suggests the Liberals have been using job re-training money to reward unions and other groups who supported the Liberals' re-election campaign last year.
