Business gives hope to people with Dyslexia

Deciphering Dyslexia

There's no better motivation to get into business than a desire to improve lives.

"The program I offer is designed to correct the learning disability, whereas most other programs only offer coping strategies," entrepreneur Cheryl Wood says.

She owns a company called Deciphering Dyslexia (www.decipheringdyslex ia.com), based in Huntsville, Ont.

Wood says she launched her small business because she saw a need to help people with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, such as ADD, ADHD, dyspraxia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia.

Her company provides a corrective program for people who suffer from these learning difficulties.

"I work with individuals from the age of eight to 88," Wood says. "We deliver a one-week, one-on-one, intensive program that gets to the root cause of many different types of learning styles."

In business for about a year, Wood discovered her passion to work with other dyslexic people when her own 12-year-old daughter started having difficulties in school.

"My husband and I learned that the challenges we encountered throughout our lives were inherited by our daughter," she says. "So, I set out to see if there was a solution for other families like ours."

She found that solution with The Davis Dyslexia Association International and became a certified facilitator to deliver their effective learning program.

Wood loves knowing she is making a truly positive contribution to improve the lives of her clients.

She also loves challenging people's misconceptions and misunderstandings about these learning disabilities.

As an entrepreneur she's learned to harness the power of word of mouth promotion. "The more I talk about my business, the better I seem to do," she says. "I have learned that word of mouth advertising is the fastest way to spread any kind of news."

Future plans for her company include talking to more people about dyslexia throughout the Muskokas and Northern Ontario.
